Executive Time Management Workshop

Wednesday, 2 April 2014, we had attended a workshop with title "Executive Time Management Workshop", which organized by a group of students who come from Department of Communication, from 12pm-2pm, at Auditorium KPD.E This workshop is a grand plan launched by the White Rabbit team to encourage better time management among students and lecturers.

First of all, as Mr. Rajen mentioned, the four types of generations are Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y and Generation Z.

Baby Boomers

Baby Boomers are those born in the years after World War II (aged roughly 47-65). They are now close to retirement age and who have experienced the post-war era of the Great Depression and prosperity raised. As a group, they are the richest, more active and physically fit generation of that time, and also one of the first to grow up really expect the world to improve with time. Their work is much focused and very competitive. Their generation's sheer size means that temporary workers have always been a lot of competition, and competitive spirit through almost everything about them. It proved that they need to focus on the time to complete the work. Therefore, we also can say that Baby Boomers are emphasized at time management.

Generation X

Generation X born roughly between the early 1960s to the early 1980s. Gen X are usually labeled as "slacker" generation, who uncommitted and unfocused. They are the first generation has experienced a massive divorce, and may have to change jobs several times. While their parents grew up in the era of the civil rights movement, Gen X is considered more likely to want to keep their heads down, rather than changing the world. Unlike previous generations, members of Generation X work to live rather than live to work. They appreciate fun in the workplace and advocacy of an effort to work. And also, Generation X managers often humorous and games into work activities.

Generation Y

Generation Y, also known as Millennials, those born between 1981 and 1994. Common put-downs include lazy, debt-ridden and programmed for instant gratification. They are portrayed as demanding and unrealistic in their career aspirations. Generation Y is much less likely to respond to the traditional command-and-control type of management still popular in much of today's workforce. Unlike boomers who tend to put a high priority on career, today's youngest workers are more interested in making their jobs accommodate their family and personal lives. They want jobs with flexibility, telecommuting options and the ability to go part time or leave the workforce temporarily when children are in the picture.

Generation Z

Those born 1995-2009, they are the first generation never to have experienced the pre-internet world. This is the first generation to be born with complete technology. They were born with PCs, mobile phones, gaming devices, MP3 players and the internet. They don’t know how the life without technology. For them , social media platforms are a way to communicate with the outside world. They are not bothered about privacy and are willing to share intimate details about themselves with complete strangers.

I Need Feminism

Wednesday, 26 March 2014, we had attended a talk and launch with title "I Need Feminism", which organized by a group of students who come from Department of Communication, from 12pm-2pm, at Lower Foyer, Main Block.

This campaign "I Need Feminism" had a talk regarding the topic of empowering young women through fashion and the importance of feminism in this day and age. Besides, it is worth that they had invited two speakers to attend which are Ms. Wei San from the All Women's Action Society (AWAM), and Ms. Anna Nishaburi from ZALORA to share some information about Feminism.

One of the fact question asked by AWAM that I could remember and agree is Feminism is about challenging systemic inequalities, men are not the enemy, Patriarchy is. Sometimes, many men hear the word "feminist", they feel very disgusted, they think that the group of feminist women are just because they can not find a man so that they try to attack men. In addition, there is also another argument, which is due to human instill down the old concept from the past, so now people will still consider the social status of men are higher than women. According to online data, it shows that only 20% of men admit to feminists, 25% of people believe that "feminism" is an insult to this title.

In fact, feminism has profoundly changed the lives of women and men. Feminism had made a lot of important implications in the western countries, including women the right to vote; relatively equal wages; the emergence of proposed initiative of divorce and the "no-fault divorce", the rights of safe abortion and ligation, the right to get university education and so on.

For me, feminism is necessary to fight for more power because their main purpose is just to qualify for gender equality in the whole world. While the term "Feminism" was not born in Asia, the concept itself, that women have equal rights, and that they have to fight inequality, that is a part of their own heritage.

Tutorial Exercise 4

Wednesday, 26 February 2014, Department of Communication had invited a special guest, Datuk Kadir Jasin, who presented us a talk with title "Brickbats And Bravura of Modern Day Journalists", from 12pm - 2pm at Theatrette, Main Block. The main content of this talk was related to the impact of social media.

In this age of advanced technology, social media plays a very important role in a variety of fields. Social media is a kind of technology and websites that people use to communicate, share ideas, views and experiences with each other. Social media can be expressed in many different forms, such as text, images, music, video and more. Social media become the most popular and most time-consuming online activities. The rise of social media greatly changed the life of the people, which has led us into an era of advanced social networking.

First of all, the main advantage of social media is the interaction between people. Through the network to communicate can effectively reach a result on a topic and the cost is relatively lower than other media. The dissemination of information from social media has become a major task that people browse the Internet, which is not only allowing people more easily get the latest information, but also to attract the traditional media to follow up on social media.

As we spend a lot of time on social media, which is obviously a great opportunity for those companies will begin the implementation of network advertising. We are accustomed to using social networking sites to access information about products and services, so that it will not only narrow the distance between the companies and us, but also provide an opportunity for companies to engage with their target market closely and make a targeted advertising and marketing campaigns. For the major social networking sites, their main purpose is to promote contacts and recreational users.

In conclusion, social media has had a huge influence on the different aspects. Social media has changing our social life greatly. The use of social media to communicate with others however can bring a lot of benefits for both sides. Therefore, I really think that social media is a very important invention for our modern world nowadays.

Tutorial Exercise 3

*Pepsi vs Coca Cola Commercial

The joy of Pepsi and Coca Cola. Both of them are the most successful brands in the world. They were rivals to each other trying to dominate the carbonated soft drinks market. Through all the commercial or ads, we can clearly know that the strong competition between two big companies that sell the same product.

In the commercial, there is a child who is going to buy a drink in a vending machine. The commercial has  twist in making you believe one thing and turning into another. The first assume that the child is buying two Coca Cola bottles, but that idea changes as he puts them on the floor and steps on them to reach and buy a bottle of Pepsi. It is not only a way of saying that Pepsi is much better than Coca Cola, but it is is indirectly saying that buying a Coca Cola is not worth it and that buying a Pepsi is worth more than two Coca Cola´s. The commercial is clearly comparing two highly competitive soft drinks in the market and convey a message with a powerful and shock.

In marketing and advertisement, it is extremely important that the commercial or the ad that a certain company is trying to sell is somehow related to the audience and the culture in which people live in. In this advertisement people are able to associate with children and to how they think critically.

In my opinion, I think that although this kind of commercial is really interesting and entertainment, but we should not depreciate other just to raise themselves. This may affect the perception of the consumers to the brand, and even allow consumers to question the morality of the brand. Besides, there are many ways to interpret their brand benefits, but this is definitely not the right way to depreciate other brand, even naming the names of the brand into the commercial is really very wrong.

Of course, nowadays, there are only this two brands to be able to have such a big influence for this kind of competitive commercial, if the change is to substitute other brands, this commercial may encounter more criticism or resulting in the opposite effect.
